Many people have searched in vain for Vinland. In 1960, Helge Ingstad discovered faint traces of a settlement from around the year AD 1000 at L'Anse aux Meadows, Newfounland, Canada. Excavations have revealed the remains of eight large turf houses af a type well-known from Greenland and Iceland. L'Anse aux Meadows is on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
